On August 20, 2024, the University Laboratory School welcomed special guests from Hiroshima City, Japan. Mr. Mikio Saiki and Ms. Teruko Yahata, survivors of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima that took place on August 6, 1945, shared their story of survival and the hope for peace in the world. There was also a special presentation from Hiroshima City high school and university students, which led to stimulating small group discussions between ULS students and Hiroshima City students on the topic of world peace.
This visit is based on the sister park agreement between Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Park in Hawai‘i. This agreement aims to bring awareness to the past, share new ideas for the future, and promote the importance of both parks in an effort to increase visitorship. These parks share a common goal: to be understood.
The agreement provided the opportunity for Japanese high school and university students, the atomic bomb survivors, and officials from the following government agencies: Hiroshima City Government, Internationalization Division, and International Peace Promotion Departments to visit Hawai‘i and share their experiences, and culture.
ULS was extremely honored to be able to host this special visit and experience such an incredible learning opportunity around the importance of peace, empathy, and understanding in our world.
