ABOUT THE
SECOND LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

The University Laboratory School’s Second Language department is committed to equip our students linguistically and culturally to communicate in this pluralistic society where they live and later where they work.

We encourage our students to maintain proficiency and fluency in their mother language and in the second language they have chosen to study.

SECOND LANGUAGE COURSES

Grade Level: 12

This course will help students to express their own ideas and opinions about general topics of interest in various conversational situations. Students will utilize different kinds of Hawaiian Language sources and present on their findings.

In Hawaiian II, students continue to develop skills and knowledge acquired in Hawaiian I. Emphasis will be placed on developing fluency and accuracy for interpersonal communication.

This is an introductory Hawaiian course. Students will acquire facility in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will also gain an understanding of and respect for the Hawaiian culture and its people through the learning of Hawaiian language.

Students will review the content learned in Spanish I and II and move to speak about real life situations like traveling by plane or train, staying in a hotel, shopping and ordering meals in a restaurant. Students will describe events in the present tense, past tense and future tense. They will also use the perfect tense the conditional form, the imperative and the Subjunctive Mood.

This second year course is designed to refine and expand the knowledge and skills acquired during the Spanish I course. The Foreign Language Standards or the five C’s will be the mode for teaching and learning. Second Language learning emphasizes: Communication, Culture, Communities, Comparison and Connection. Emphasis will be placed in developing fluency and accuracy of the language for interpersonal communication. Cultural practices will be investigated to promote appreciation and understanding of oneself and others.

In this introductory Spanish course you will build your Spanish vocabulary and familiarize yourself with foundational grammar structures while exercising four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing; with an emphasis on building conversation skills.

This course will help students to express their own ideas and opinions about general topics of interest in various conversational situations and independently obtain information from written materials from different sources.

In this course, students continue to develop skills and knowledge acquired in Japanese I, students continue to improve their four basic skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in functional way through introduction to vocabulary and grammar.

This is an introductory Japanese course.  In this course, students will develop four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) through communicative activities.  Students learn how to express themselves in specific real-life situations.  Japanese culture is an important thread throughout the Japanese courses.
